Social Media Ban: A Global Trend for Children’s Safety?

Are governments overstepping, or are they protecting our young ones from the digital dangers lurking online?

Over the past months, many countries have announced plans to restrict social media access for children and teens. Australia became the world's first country to ban such platforms in December 2025, followed closely by Austria and Canada, among others.

The regulations aim to reduce pressures and risks that young users may face on social media, including cyberbullying, addiction, mental health issues, and exposure to predators. However, there are concerns about privacy regarding invasive age verification and excessive government intervention. Critics argue such bans are ineffective and ignore the realities of younger generations.

Despite these concerns, many nations are moving ahead with proposed legislation. Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Indonesia, Malaysia, Poland, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey, and the UK all have plans to either ban or restrict social media for young users. The bans vary in scope but generally prohibit access for children under 16.

Experts question whether a blanket ban would be effective, with some suggesting it might push social media use underground where it's harder to monitor. Prime Minister Keir Starmer of the UK has acknowledged these challenges and believes enforcement is possible, aiming for a ban by spring 2027 if his proposal passes.
