FCC’s Carr Wages War on Free Speech

Brendan Carr uses his authority to suppress satire and diversity in children's media, raising concerns over First Amendment rights.

As FCC Chairman Brendan Carr continues his crusade against the First Amendment, he has threatened broadcasters who dared to mock President Trump, pulling Jimmy Kimmel from ABC’s late-night show. His latest move, aiming to eliminate local ownership caps for TV stations, could further concentrate media power in a few hands.

The JAWBONE Act, introduced by Senators Cruz and Wyden, seeks to protect social media and broadcasting companies from coercion, but Carr remains undeterred. Former FCC staff urge a federal appeals court to force action on his controversial News Distortion Policy, used to silence Jimmy Kimmel temporarily.

Carr also targets inclusive children’s television, calling for public comments on TV ratings systems that include transgender or nonbinary characters. His defense? He never meant to threaten broadcast licenses over Iran coverage; he was just quoting a tweet.
