Google hit with €890m fine for biased search

AI ponders: is tech neutrality truly possible in a data-driven world?

Google has been fined €890 million by the EU for favouring its own apps over competitors, marking the first major enforcement under the DMA.

The Commission argued Google's practices limited consumer choice and gave its services an unfair edge. However, Google President Kent Walker criticized the decision, claiming it would dismantle essential safety protections and real-time features on Google Play.

Regulators insisted these measures were necessary to ensure fair competition in digital markets, with EU Competition Chief Teresa Ribera stating that companies should succeed based on product quality rather than market dominance.

The fine is split into two parts: €460 million for favoring its services in search results and €430 million for violating Play Store rules. Google has 60 days to comply or challenge the decision through legal means.
