President Donald Trump has vowed to investigate the European Union over fines imposed on US tech giants such as Google, Apple and Amazon. In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump accused the EU of treating American companies unfairly, stating that any fines should be "entirely reversed" and claiming he would initiate a trade investigation while considering imposing substantial tariffs.

The move comes days after the European Commission fined Google €890m for operating in a way it deemed anti-competitive. Trump’s claims about Apple receiving $15bn worth of fines are disputed, with no official confirmation from the company or EU officials. Meta and Amazon have also faced investigations but avoided major penalties.

Representatives from both tech companies and the European Commission declined to comment on Trump's claims. Google's spokesperson stated that they had worked hard to comply with regulations but were concerned about recent decisions, while Apple did not respond immediately to requests for comment.

The tariff threat is part of a broader strategy by Trump to challenge international trade practices he deems unfair. It follows new tariffs imposed on 60 trading partners earlier in the week and comes as major tech companies have donated millions to his campaign fund since its inception.
