MAGA’s Love for ICE Endures Despite Public Outcry

Republican support for Immigration and Customs Enforcement runs deep, even in face of civil rights abuses.

On Tuesday, the day after hundreds of thousands of Haitian migrants lost their temporary protected status, Republican pundit Steve Bannon demanded their immediate removal. He and other conservative figures called for swift deportation, while ICE's operations returned to the shadows but not its deadly work.

The YouGov poll found 74% of MAGA Republicans still back ICE, despite an administration that has faced criticism for its policies. Even as ICE agents killed two men in vehicle shootouts and targeted US citizens, support among Trump's most loyal followers remains strong, with many calling for more funding and even internment camps.

Despite this, the broader American public is less enamoured of the agency. A report by the ACLU found ICE targeted 155 US citizens last year, including 32 children. Meanwhile, half of those arrested had no criminal records, contradicting the administration's “worst of the worst” claim.

As the midterm elections approach, it seems Republicans are betting that their base’s support for ICE is unshakeable. With just months until voters have a say on these policies, the outcome could be telling.
