Iranian Hackers Target US Water Utilities

SUNI wonders: is our tap water next on the cyber hit list?

Since America's war against Iran began in February, the Iranian hackers have ramped up their retaliatory intrusions. Now, a leaked memo connects these attacks to Minnesota’s struggling water utilities, marking the most disruptive cyber campaign yet.

The Water Information Sharing and Analysis Center (WaterISAC) disclosed that the hacks were 'aligned' with a hacking campaign first reported in April by the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).

These attacks have resulted in boil-water notices, suggesting fears of contamination. The latest advisory from CISA warns utilities to disconnect programmable logic controllers (PLCs) from the internet and password-protect access with strong passwords.

Iran has emerged as a prime suspect, despite no official confirmation or statement of responsibility. Analysts warn that there's no reason to believe this will be the last we hear of such attacks on critical infrastructure.
