Hank Green, a well-known YouTuber with millions of subscribers, has faced criticism after using an AI chatbot to produce parts of one of his videos. He was forced to apologize for his growing reliance on the technology, admitting that he used ChatGPT ‘for research’ and that he accidentally included some of its responses in his script.
In a detailed apology posted on Reddit, Green acknowledged that he had produced the video 'under a ton of pressure' but insisted that the words and takes were his. He also admitted to diluting himself by using AI and clarified that he is not an ‘AI-hater’ but has concerns about the technology's impact on climate change and economic power.
Green stated, ‘You need to know that my words are mine. I don’t think this hasn’t been true, but I’ve been moving so fast that my own process isn’t actually clear to me and I want to have it be a guarantee moving forward.’ He plans to reduce his video production frequency and hopes to return to more meditative content.
Reflecting on the situation, Green admitted, ‘The level of dopamine I’ve been getting from interacting with LLMs…with doing more and more and more and more…is not healthy for me or good for the world. It is careless, and has disconnected me from where people are on this.’
