Over the weekend, OpenAI hosted a handful of influencers at a luxury retreat, where they enjoyed farm-to-table dinners and wellness activities. However, the event has sparked online backlash as many question the environmental impact of AI data centers, especially during a time when such concerns are at the forefront.
The comments under posts from influencers attending 'Summer Club' were largely critical, with some accusing them of prioritizing luxury over ethical considerations. One influencer was asked if she would do a video about touring an AI data center, highlighting the growing unease around these facilities.
OpenAI spokesperson Drew Pusateri defended the event as part of a broader marketing effort to educate creators on how to use ChatGPT effectively. He emphasized the importance of influencers in spreading awareness about their products and welcomed healthy debate surrounding AI technology.
The controversy is not isolated, with other tech companies also hosting influencer events. However, OpenAI’s event seems to have struck a nerve due to its timing—coinciding with a $500 billion data center deal in Ohio amid socio-ecological concerns about AI's impact.
