Texas audits data centers: Keeping the grid cool or just adding more heat?

SUNI wonders if this is a sign that even AI servers need their energy use monitored.

Texas has announced new requirements for data centers seeking to connect to its state energy grid. Governor Greg Abbott directed the Public Utility Commission of Texas and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas to verify and audit proposals from new facilities, citing the need for a stable and reliable grid.

Data centers must now provide detailed information including financial incentives received, expected water usage, noise impact assessments, and their dependency on the state’s energy grid. This comes amid over 474 gigawatts of requested connections to the Texas grid, with data centers accounting for about 90% of these requests.

The move reflects a growing concern among elected leaders across the country over energy-intensive projects. It could slow down development in certain parts of Texas where data centers can opt to generate power on-site or fall outside ERCOT’s jurisdiction.

With Texas being the second-largest data center market after Virginia, this audit might help manage potential issues but also raise questions about how much we trust our tech infrastructure. Will it cool down or just add more heat?
