The shift towards simple cycle units at other major tech companies suggests these gas plants may become commonplace, despite their higher emissions. Such rapid deployment prioritises speed and cost over environmental concerns, threatening to create an inefficient parallel grid.
Simple cycle turbines are favoured due to their quick start-up times, making them ideal for AI training demands but less suitable for long-term efficiency. This trend could lead to a significant increase in fossil fuel use, jeopardising climate goals and sustainability efforts.
The federal government encourages on-site generation to avoid raising consumer bills, but this may come at the expense of higher emissions. As the tech industry continues its rapid expansion, so too does the environmental cost.
