Meta’s Ads Went Too Far—Again

An AI tool that could have turned politicians into porn stars was allowed to slip through Meta’s fingers once more.

Meta platforms recently ran ads for an AI porn-generation tool called Kromix, despite the company’s strict policies against such content. The ads encouraged users to create deepfaked videos of female US politicians, raising serious concerns about the platform's ability to enforce its guidelines and protect public figures from inappropriate use of their images.

The app itself offers a range of disturbing scenarios for paid users, including 'bedroom rape' and 'Disney love', with videos featuring AI-generated pornographic scenes. Apple, too, has struggled with similar apps on its App Store, leading to cease-and-desist letters from law enforcement.

Meta defended its stance by stating that ads are reviewed against their policies using automated tools before publication. However, this case highlights the ongoing challenges in detecting and removing harmful content, especially when advertisers use tactics to evade detection. As AI technology becomes more accessible, these issues will continue to pose significant risks to privacy and public safety.
