Some owners of the Framework Laptop 13 with older AMD processors have reported that a recent BIOS update has left their devices unusable. The offending update, version 3.20 for Ryzen 7040-series mainboards, has caused some laptops to get stuck on the update screen.

In response, Framework has confirmed that in-warranty and out-of-warranty affected mainboards will receive replacements. However, the company's approach to out-of-warranty boards has been met with mixed reactions – some customers have been offered a replacement under warranty, while others are being asked to purchase new hardware.

Founder Nirav Patel stated that Framework is investigating the root cause of this issue and is providing exceptions for out-of-warranty replacements where they can confirm a stable-release BIOS update caused the problem. To aid in recovery, Framework has introduced 'Crisis Recovery Mode' functionality, which will be rolled out to future BIOS updates.

The Verge asked about the exact percentage of affected devices and the timeline for Crisis Recovery Mode but received only an estimate that it is a “small percentage” with plans to release it before the end of the year.
