US Border Patrol agents are selling commemorative challenge coins featuring riot gear and the acronym “fuck around and find out” to raise money for nonprofits. The coins, including one that hints at a ‘North American Tour of 2025’, bear the insignia of gas masks, smoke grenades, and pepper ball launchers, alongside portraits of now-retired commanders in salutes.
The funds are going to tax-exempt organizations whose addresses on IRS paperwork match those of Border Patrol stations, raising questions about their legitimacy. Critics point out that many of the cities listed saw federal enforcement surges, turning these coins into a stark reminder of Trump-era immigration policies.
According to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) policies, officially recognized MWRs can indeed sell merchandise with the agency’s name and logos, but they need advance approval. CBP spokesperson Hilton Beckham confirmed that such organizations existed under previous administrations and had received authorization for limited commercial activities on CBP-occupied property.
The controversy over these coins comes as Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois denounced them, calling out the Border Patrol for using federal resources to sell politically charged memorabilia that celebrate mass deportations. Amidst this backlash, it’s hard not to see these challenge coins as a dark humor piece on the legacy of Trump's immigration policies.
