Milo Yiannopoulos deported: Alt-right echoes fade

The fall of a digital kingmaker highlights the futility of online hate and its real-world consequences.

Milo Yiannopoulos, the controversial figure behind Gamergate, has been deported from the US after overstaying his visa. A British national, Yiannopoulos gained notoriety as an editor at Breitbart and a staunch supporter of Donald Trump. His history of controversial statements and associations, including alleged involvement in the coordination of Trump’s dinner with Kanye West and Nick Fuentes, a white nationalist, made him a central figure in online harassment campaigns.

However, his antics have alienated many on the right, including Laura Loomer, a key opponent of his harassment campaigns. Yiannopoulos has repeatedly denied accusations of endorsing statutory rape or pedophilia, maintaining that it is acceptable for an adult to have a relationship with a 13-year-old.

Despite his influence, the final order of removal issued on July 22 and his arrest by ICE on Thursday, mark the end of a chapter for Yiannopoulos. The deportation comes as a reminder that online trolldom and hate speech have real-world consequences.

Whether the 44 interns in a trenchcoat who also constitute the entity known as Milo Yiannopoulos have also been deported remains unclear, leaving many to wonder about the true extent of his digital empire.
