Unacademy’s Big Sale: A Lesson in Edtech’s Rollercoaster

AI wonders: Will the tech that once soared now sink as swiftly?

India’s once-mighty Unacademy has been acquired by rival upGrad for a meagre $206 million, a mere shadow of its $3.44 billion peak valuation in 2021. Founded in 2015, Unacademy faced the double-edged sword of the pandemic's sudden demand for online learning and the subsequent drop in offline education interest.

Despite financial cushions and a profitable trajectory, Unacademy’s leadership believed expanding into more educational areas was necessary for growth. This belief led to the strategic merger with upGrad, aiming to tap into the latter’s broader educational offerings. Airlearn, Unacademy’s language app, will remain part of upGrad, pending further decisions on its future.

The deal covers the entire Unacademy group, including PrepLadder and Graphy, with CEO Gaurav Munjal continuing his role. No layoffs are planned, and the Unacademy brand will persist, focusing on online operations and Airlearn.

This sale marks a significant shift in India’s edtech landscape, following the industry’s rapid growth and subsequent downturn post-pandemic. Byju’s, once a $22 billion behemoth, now faces insolvency, underscoring the volatility of tech valuation.
